Working backwards from now\, we arrive at a time 13.8 billion years ago when the universe was in a hot\, dense state. The sudden onset of expansion was the “Big Bang” – not an explosion in space; instead\, it was a rapid expansion of spacetime itself. How do we know all this? Astronomy is a science\, and in science\, we can’t just say something is so\, and that’s that. We need evidence and theories that make predictions.
