SUMMARY:2025 Annual Burbidge Dinner
DESCRIPTION:The after dinner speaker for this year’s Burbidge Dinner will be Professor Geraint Lewis. \nHeavenly Tensions: Is modern cosmology in crisis? \nIn this talk\, Professor Lewis will explore the growing tensions in modern cosmology—observational discrepancies that may signal cracks in the standard model. He will start with the Hubble tension\, a persistent mismatch between early- and late-universe measurements of the expansion rate\, which challenges our understanding of cosmic history. From there\, we will examine the cosmological principle\, the assumption of large-scale uniformity\, and how emerging evidence of dipole anisotropies—directional patterns in distributions of galaxies—may undermine this foundational idea. He will conclude with a “state of the nation” overview\, assessing whether cosmology is facing a genuine crisis or simply entering a new phase of discovery.  \nGeraint F. Lewis was born in Old South Wales and studied astrophysics at the University of London before earning his PhD from Cambridge in 1995. After research positions in the US and Canada\, he moved to Australia in 2000\, where he is now Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Sydney. His research spans the influence of dark energy and dark matter on cosmic evolution\, the use of gravitational lensing to probe the nature of quasars and the distribution of dark matter\, and the dynamics of galactic cannibalism in the Local Group. Geraint is also a passionate science communicator\, with several books and numerous public talks exploring the deep questions of cosmology\, physics and the meaning of reality. \n  \n\nTicket prices:\n\nMembers Early Bird price (paid by 17 Oct): $65\nMembers price after 17 Oct: $75\nNon-members: $75 earlybird\, $85 after 17 Oct.\n\n\n\n\nPayment can be made to:\nAuckland Astronomical Society\n12-3061-0321397-00\nPlease use your surname and Dinner as references for the payment.\n\n  \n \n

SUMMARY:2026 Annual Burbidge Dinner
DESCRIPTION:This is the Annual Burbidge Dinner held in honour of the principle founder of the Auckland Astronomical Society\, Professor Percy Burbidge. Prior to the start of dinner we will be presenting the awards for the winners of the 2026 New Zealand Astrophotography Competition. The Dinner will be followed by the Burbidge Lecture\, which will be delivered by Dr Culan Howlett from the University of Queensland. \nDr Howlett is a Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics in the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland\, and recipient of the 2026 Pawsey Medal from the Australian Academy of Science. His research focuses on mapping the positions and motions of millions of galaxies to understand how our Universe has evolved since the Big Bang — and to shed light on the mysterious dark matter and dark energy that make up 95% of everything in it. \nDr Howlett works on some of the largest galaxy surveys ever undertaken including: \nDESI (the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument) — a project mapping tens of millions of galaxies across the Universe.\n4HS (the 4M OST Hemisphere Survey) — a new southern-sky survey that began observations in 2026\, in which he leads the cosmology team. \nTicket Information \nThe price includes attendance and a buffet dinner. There will be a cash bar available. The final booking date is 8th November 2026. \nEarlybird price for members and their guests $65 pp until 31st October 2026. After 31st October until 8th November\, the price for members and their guests is $75 pp. \nMembers may book tickets by logging in to the Hello Club Auckland Astronomical Society membership portal and select 2026 Burbidge Dinner from the Upcoming Events:  \nhttps://members.astronomy.org.nz/ \nEarlybird price for non members is $75 pp until 31st October 2026. After 31st October until 8th November\, the price for non members is $85 pp. Note that non members are required to pay the ticket fee at time of booking. Non members can purchase tickets by emailing treasurer @ astronomy dot org dot nz \n  \n  \n
